Harvesting Gourds Wreath CHEAP Copy

August brings many happy items to my mailbox.  The September issue of Vogue.  Ahhhhh….

AND

Grandin Road’s Halloween Haven 2013.

I’m flipping through the pages and thinking and planning and ….. SCREECH…  you want WHAT?!?!?!

$359 dollars for a WREATH?!?!!?  No detail overlooked.  I get it.  But HELLO?!?!?  You are kidding me, right?  THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY NINE DOLLARS FOR A WREATH???????

Grandin Harvest Wreath

Hello trip to Michael’s and 40% coupon.

038

First, I wrapped a Styrofoam wreath in burlap to give it a base.

036

I have never made this kind of wreath before and had no idea where to start.  So I tied some ribbons….

037

… and kept tying and making bows.  I used hot glue to secure the ribbon.

039

I was a bow making crazy woman!  I made a bow, and then folded it back over and glued it again.

040

Until it seemed to be mostly covered.

022

To make the face gourds, I started with white spray paint on your standard cheapy plastic gourds.

034

I quote from the description of the expensive wreath, “resin gourds with faces have been lovingly and meticulously designed by a master sculptor…”

These gourds with faces have been lovingly and meticulously designed by MY FAMILY.

027v2

Much more precious than a master sculptor, don’t you think?

027v3

For the accent gourds, I spray painted with lime green, and then dotted on the white circles.

024

Instead of the harvest hat, I went with a small swag with a little bling.  Fortunately, I was able to stick it through the ribbon and it fit perfectly.

025

This is from someone who can’t sew a button.  I took one of those needle thingies and some wire and stuck it through the gourds and then tied it around.

003

I’m sure there is a more official DIY way to do this, but I’m an amateur and swinging by the cuffs of my pants.  And I know all of you superstar crafty ladies are cringing with my hack job but hey… a beginner has to start somewhere right?!?!?!

004

I also added a couple blingy butterflies.

009

How cute is this swag?!?!?!

010

Added a bow on top and it is now the fall centerpiece on the door.

021

Ok… ok… I know it’s not E.X.A.C.T.L.Y like the $359 dollar wreath, but for me and my DIY clutziness, don’t you think it turned out super cute (and relatively close)?

And for minimal dollars and a few hours of effort, it was a lot of fun to make.

Love, hugs, and… $359.00…. seriously???
